(Reposted from my first blog, Recipes Redesigned.)
This smoothie is a go-to meal at our house. It is quick, easy to make, and packed with nutrition. We all love it, even the kids! We frequently make this smoothie for breakfast. It is a great post-exercise snack too for my kids and husband after their Jiu-Jitsu class.
As I talk about in the video, we like to use hemp protein powder. Check out the video for more about why we like hemp. The hemp protein powder we like to use blends smoothly into the smoothie and is not gritty as some hemp protein powders are. The protein powder makes the smoothie a more complete meal. And by including spinach or kale, it provides a serving of green vegetables too!
The key to making a smoothie with an appealing texture, especially when greens are added, is the blender. It is important to have one that can handle the cellular membranes of the greens.
As I explain in the video, this recipe is not really much of a recipe. It is more of an ingredients list with suggested proportions. :)
I hope you enjoy this smoothie as much as we do. It is a great way to start the day with a breakfast packed with vitamins, minerals and protein. Check out the variations listed at the end of the post for more smoothie ideas.
Fruit & Hemp Green Smoothie
- 1/2 to 1 ripe banana
- 2 scoops of hemp protein powder
- blueberries, frozen or fresh
- strawberries, frozen or fresh
- baby spinach or kale
- chocolate almond milk
- unsweetened almond milk
Add the banana and protein powder to the blender cup. This should fill up about 1/3 of the cup space. For the next 1/3 of the cup space, add the fruit. Make the fruit be about 2/3 blueberries and 1/3 strawberries. Now your blender cup should be about 2/3 full. Pack in a couple handfuls of baby spinach or kale (removed from the stalk).
Next, add the liquid. Fill to the max fill line on the blender cup, using a mixture of chocolate almond milk and unsweetened almond milk. Have 1/3 of your liquid be the chocolate almond milk and about 2/3 of your liquid be unsweetened almond milk.
This is not an exact recipe by any means. Just eyeball the proportions I refer to. You really can't mess it up.
Add the blender blades and twist on the lid. Pulse the mixture a few times then blends for about 20-30 seconds. Pour into a tall glass, add a straw and drink up to your good health!
